Exothermic Hot Topping Compound
Keep the riser liquid. Get sound castings and a higher yield.

In ingot casting and foundry work, the riser is the last part of the casting to solidify — and it is where shrinkage cavities and pipe form. An Exothermic Hot Topping Compound — also called riser exothermic compound, anti-piping compound or exothermic topping — is added to the top of the riser. It reacts with the liquid steel and releases heat, keeping the riser molten for longer so it keeps feeding metal into the shrinking casting below.
ArcSteel supplies three grades: Exothermic Hot Topping Compound for general riser practice, Exothermic Feeding Compound which combines heat generation with active feeding, and Exothermic Covering Compound for hot-top practice where insulation matters as much as heat. Grades are matched to ingot weight, section size and the steel grade being cast.
The practical result is measurable: less pipe, less top cropping, a higher yield per ingot, and less re-work on rolled or forged product.
Available grades
- Grade
Exothermic Hot Topping Compound
The standard grade for ingot moulds and foundry risers — generates heat to delay solidification at the head.
- Grade
Exothermic Feeding Compound
Combines heat release with active feeding, so the riser keeps topping up the casting as it contracts.
- Grade
Exothermic Covering Compound
For hot-top practice — insulates the head while generating heat, and forms a soft crust that is easy to remove.
What it does for your line
- Keeps the riser molten longer — shrinkage cavities and pipe stay in the head
- Higher yield per ingot: less top cropping, more saleable metal
- Sound internal quality, so less rejection at rolling and forging
- Consistent ignition and burn rate — the same result heat after heat
- Lighter, easier-to-remove crust that speeds up mould preparation
- Grades matched to ingot weight, section size and steel grade

Covering Agent
Cut heat loss from molten steel. Stop secondary oxidation dead.
Spread on the molten bath, a Covering Agent melts into a continuous protective layer that holds heat in, keeps air out and absorbs the inclusions that rise to the surface.

Slag Fluidizer
Thins the slag you already have — so the lime dissolves and the reactions speed up.
A Slag Fluidizer, not a slag former. Added at the converter or the refining ladle, it penetrates viscous high-lime slag, breaks down the calcium silicate network and pulls the melting point down — so lime that was sitting undissolved goes into solution and the slag you already paid for can finally do its job.

Ingot Teeming Flux
Clean ingot surfaces. Fewer dressing hours. Less scrap.
Added to the mould during teeming, this flux forms a protective liquid layer that keeps oxygen away from the rising steel, lubricates the mould wall and helps gas and inclusions escape — for a smoother ingot surface straight out of the mould.
